Notes:
I would agree find music that you love, its should be your personal mission to sort through all the music that you have access to and "program" an evening of listening enjoyment that would make you freak out on the dance floor.

I watched a youtube video from a trusted source (briansredd) the other night that reminded me of this.

A large system and happy dancers will smooth over the less then flawless DJ mixing short falls. But their is no escape from bad music selection.

Now by no means am I saying only play commercial stuff, but what I'm saying is that every track you put down should be the next best thing. You should be excited about the next track, heck you should be just bearly holding yourself together with excitement for what your doing. If you feel it, then your crowd will be feeling it. (That is unless your playing hardcore techno for an old persons home, then again I'm sure their are places in London & SF were that might go over pretty well.)

J.Smooth, aka Joseph Candidi, has been playing live music since the age of 10 and started Djing at 15. He is has also been considered one of the pioneers in the Electronic Music Scene for more than a decade. Smooth was already traveling regularly by the age of 18 and had his first 12" single under his belt. He has traveled to various parts of the world as a Drum n Bass Producer/ Dj and has made a permanent imprint in the minds of electronic music lovers everywhere.

He started 3 record labels with long time friend and business partner Justin Geller. In the late 90s- early 2000, While signed to the monstrous Warner Brothers Records under a subsidiary label F-111, J.Smooth was given a chance to make his mark in electronic music history. He was Djing events and traveling with tours throughout the U.S out to Hawaii, then Canada, Mexico, and even Japan; Whenever Smooth performed an event or even set foot in a club, He definitely made his presence known.

So many people from coast to coast can relate to the sounds of J.Smooth. Whether they’ve seen a live set, heard his wide variety of original production, or maybe just listened to any of his legendary mixes, one thing is for sure, He has a style and sound that you will never forget.

J.Smooth has a wicked discography of Original Songs, Remixes, and continuous Dj Mixes. He has worked with countless other Artists, Vocalists and MCs and has incorporated in his recordings a variety of sounds and style fueled by the constant drive for musical exploration.

Whether in the studio or on the decks, with out a doubt, J.Smooth can make anyone dance while leaving you with a sense of satisfaction that cannot be put into words.

Terry Mullan, Chicago's turntablist extraordinaire, turns out dance floors week after week throughout the US and abroad. Any true fan of House Music knows his name, and celebrates his amazing DJ sets. His credits include Coachella, Starscape, Bugged Out, The End, Footwork, and Ruby Skye amongst raves as far off as Japan, Australia and Germany. He has developed a faithful following to those who know through his signature style of funky quirky jacking acid house combined with cutting and scratching making up an entirely new genre all his own.

The eighties posed as the formative years of Terry's career. Although his roots began in hip-hop, he found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Soon after gaining inspiration from Chicago air personalities like Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike "Hitman" Wilson via 102.7 WBMX, Terry made house his home. Next, when acid house hit the US, the link was completed; Terry found the sound he was looking for. It was that added flavor he was waiting for, something new, twisted and forward. Now all the elements were coming together. And with the addition of the Detroit sound, this was it, three different languages, disco, house and techno. They could all translate the same message together or apart from one another. With his fluent style, these languages reflect his DJ'ing as well as the tracks he's now composing, which is his way of furthering the evolution of dance music.

For the future, Terry is going beyond just knowing his machines. This sound is put to the test on his releases on Robsoul, Definitive, Control, Funk'd, Chicago Housing Commission, Aciiieeed, and on his own imprint, Catalyst Recordings. Through his label he has released projects for the likes of DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, Halo Varga, Mazi, Angel Alanis & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG's, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's former imprint Definitive which featured Terry's track "Sidewinder" on the Chemical Brothers "Brother's Gonna' Work It Out" Mix CD. Additionally, Terry gained notoriety for his records under the alias Speakerphreaker which includes the largely successful "Products Of Our Environment" EP, on Catalyst, which was featured on Pete Tong's essential selection on BBC Radio 1 in the UK, & "La Nina/Nickel Bag Da Funk" EP on Smile Records, which was licensed to several top DJ mix compilations. Terry's DJ'ing, label and tracks have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry's sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene. This man is truly a living legend.

The American Jungle is a feature length documentary about the North American Drum & Bass scene. We will be traveling during Spring and Summer of 2012 to over 30 cities in the U.S. and Canada documenting the history, culture, and the impact drum & bass / jungle made in North America. This teaser is a condensed version of the idea behind the concept for the full length movie. The movie/ documentary will be covering not only history, but the impact of Drum and Bass in America. This means local smaller scenes, as well as big city scenes. The first part of our teaser stresses history with a very brief summery of how it came North America. Then Knoxville, TN to show of the love people have for the music and the energy to carry it through the smaller cities scenes(making that a point of how that is a developmental aspect of it's fan base in our continent) and their local DNB promoters/dj's that make it happen. It also shows Denver as a subject, this way the average viewer is aware of what is happening with how jungle or drum and bass has developed across North America in entirety. Through not only big "raves" or "massives" and "only for the headz" underground parties in major cities, but also parties that happen throughout North America with the same energy and love shown in smaller cities. The ending is just the raw footage of people enjoying Drum and Bass, the energy, the love, and the lifestyle.The finished production hopes to meet every ones' expectations and uncover the love and dedication fans of drum and bass have in North America by giving the viewer a broad experience of what makes drum and bass a culture here. The purpose behind the project is to carry the love and passion for a music and scene, that has not been given proper exposure, to a larger audience. That way not only less knowledgeable people can develop an understanding or love for the music, but enthusiasts might even learn more about the music they love through history, interviews, and coverage of parties. This in turn hopefully allows the North American scene to develop to it's potential, and promoters, DJ's, and producers can all reach the market on the level they deserve.

DJ Tutor proposed this question and its been one that I've been tossing around in my head now and again. What I've been able to come up with is if you can keep a dance floor moving regardless of your tools your a DJ. Yes in the beginning Djs used was turntables. Fact. WHO THE FUCK CARES WHAT YOU USE NOW THIS IS THE FUTURE?!?! For fuck sake DJs were using reel to reel, tape decks, drum machines, and what have you long before the "dreaded" CD or MP3.

I personally feel this has all become a hot button issue with the "extinction" of the classic vinyl 12 inch. I put it in quotes because its far from being extinct, sure the 1200's were discontinued and finding vinyl tracks is becoming harder but thats just natural selection.

When vinyl sales were at their lowest that made my job as a DJ the most fun. Traveling all over the DMV hunting for new tunes, on the web, in back rooms or from the back of a car trunk. However this challenge put off a lot of people, so the instant gratification generation downloaded tunes that took me years to collect.

I don't hold a grudge because we are all DJ's, their collection is tangible and fits in their backpack, my collection is slowly taking over my modest studio. But we all love music. Plain. Simple. Done

RANDOMNESS: “feed the great machine” Internet good or bad?

While reading "I Mix What I Like!" by Jared Ball, I came across this paraphrase quote by Jaron Lanier. Lanier a seminal figure in computer and internet history also one of its largest critics

"…the web, [is] far from being some playing field leveler, is the perfect example of the “post-human society” where people must “feed the great machine” but only those who own or run that machine – not the people who create or who are themselves content – are to be paid. The rest of us are simply aggregated into “mobs” to be easily surveyed and marketed to by the same major corporations who determine our news and popular culture."

Then I found WillAM 580 (illinois Public Media) and their review of "You Are Not a Gadget" and interview with Jaron Lanier. [Listen Here]. Here he talks about the history pre & post internet and the history of MIDI. Lanier points out the youth of today has no idea as to the vast possibilities the internet could offer. Instead of remaining in this locked tinny "self enslaved" preconceived notion of what the web "is". However with this said its not to late for the youth to learn about the history of the web and how it works, their is still time change the tides.

Later Lanier talk about Ted Nelson the first person to conceive the idea of "linking", what makes Ted Nelson so important is his foresight into what the internet could become in 1960. Nelson was able to understand that if you made the internet into a huge copy machine (file sharing) then in turn it would just make everyone poor degrading the quality of life for all. If society only promotes the cultural, artistic and expression based parts of the web then you will have to work doubly hard in the physical world to make ends meat. In many ways the internet as we know it stifles the ability to live off your hart & your brain because of this ability to share thoughts without promoting or giving back to the creator. Nelson created & fought for a 3rd option: One account, per user & no copying. Here a user could buy and sell their content, products and ideas. However his critics were upset that he was projecting the use currency / commerce on the internet & my own thoughts that its a little big brother-ish. BA HA

Music is an interesting topic of conversation as Lanier is a musician himself. He points foul at musicians that claim that they are making a living off of giving away their music for free, noting that most of them are trust fund babies. He goes on to claim that the reason that music has not been able to progress is because musicians can no longer make a living as a musician solely.

This notion resonates with me as I'm ingesting to both the top 10 pop tunes (in America) & Drum & Bass tunes (from the UK). Both genres are over populated with blatantly sampled, checker bordered midi sequences and over quantized beats. Which only makes me dig deeper into the Jungle/Drum & Bass vinyl past. 10-20 years ago, producers were taking more chances, creating original content and developing rhythm tracks with dare I say it "soul". Why? Because at that time the UK Jungle/Drum & Bass scene had a set of testing gauntlets a track had to pass through. First you had to make a tunes you wanted invest in getting cut into a dub plate. Then it had to catch the attention of a DJ, who thought it would work in their set. Then it had to pass the dance floor test. If a tune passed threw all these tests then you either independently invested in it or you tried to get a label sign you. All of these limiting factors made the music published at that time a higher quality.

In contrast, today a DJ has to search though a flood of crap on the internet. Half baked ideas published to the web without that gauntlet of testing all in the hope of someone taking interest in your work.

Now the question: Has the internet actually helped the world we live in? Think about it for a bit before you comment.

TERRY MULLAN
Terry Mullan, Chicago's turntablist extraordinaire, turns out dance floors week after week throughout the US and abroad. Any true fan of House Music knows his name, and celebrates his amazing DJ sets. His credits include Coachella, Starscape, Bugged Out, The End, Footwork, and Ruby Skye amongst raves as far off as Japan, Australia and Germany. He has developed a faithful following to those who know through his signature style of funky quirky jacking acid house combined with cutting and scratching making up an entirely new genre all his own.

The eighties posed as the formative years of Terry's career. Although his roots began in hip-hop, he found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Soon after gaining inspiration from Chicago air personalities like Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike "Hitman" Wilson via 102.7 WBMX, Terry made house his home. Next, when acid house hit the US, the link was completed; Terry found the sound he was looking for. It was that added flavor he was waiting for, something new, twisted and forward. Now all the elements were coming together. And with the addition of the Detroit sound, this was it, three different languages, disco, house and techno. They could all translate the same message together or apart from one another. With his fluent style, these languages reflect his DJ'ing as well as the tracks he's now composing, which is his way of furthering the evolution of dance music.

For the future, Terry is going beyond just knowing his machines. This sound is put to the test on his releases on Robsoul, Definitive, Control, Funk'd, Chicago Housing Commission, Aciiieeed, and on his own imprint, Catalyst Recordings. Through his label he has released projects for the likes of DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, Halo Varga, Mazi, Angel Alanis & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG's, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's former imprint Definitive which featured Terry's track "Sidewinder" on the Chemical Brothers "Brother's Gonna' Work It Out" Mix CD. Additionally, Terry gained notoriety for his records under the alias Speakerphreaker which includes the largely successful "Products Of Our Environment" EP, on Catalyst, which was featured on Pete Tong's essential selection on BBC Radio 1 in the UK, & "La Nina/Nickel Bag Da Funk" EP on Smile Records, which was licensed to several top DJ mix compilations. Terry's DJ'ing, label and tracks have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry's sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene. This man is truly a living legend.

NOTE:
This is not fully a 10 minute mix as the camera I was using to record it only allowed me to record for 7 minutes. But its my first attempt to make a 10 minute mix.

Why do a 10 minute mix? Well while trolling YouTube for cat videos I kept running it to these 10 minute mix videos. They have been around forever from what I can tell. Even DJ Tutor has a part of their site dedicated to 10 minute mix competitions [here]. So I was curious to see what all the fuss was about.

First off as someone that plays long format style a couple of hours at a time, 10 minutes is freakishly short. But 10 minutes is the goal so about 4 songs, the top of the evening / the climax of your set. Ok I think I've got this.

aka Gavin King's career in DJing and production has spanned 16 years and under various guises, 'Godfather of jungle', 'King of the Beats' and more is responsible for introducing, entertaining and moving millions of Drum and Bass fans across the globe...

It was a friend of mind that commented "well we will see how the night goes he [Aphrodite] can be hit of miss".

That reminder took me down a notch and reminded me to never meet my hero's. BA HA. So when he dropped his first track and it was not what I expected in sound, style or tempo I just rolled with the punches. His set was new, upbeat with sprinkling reminders of the classic tunes we have all grown up with wrapped up in a Drumstep beat pattern. Any disappointment I (or anyone else) had is purely our own fault for now seeking out his newer recorded sets, this morning I spent a few hours checking out his new work. Its good but admittedly when I rolled to Ultra Bar last night, I kept Aphrodite in a time capsule of the mid to late 1990's. A friend of mine Mr. Rodgers once commented that "Drum & Bass is all about the future thats why he couldn't play old school tunes all night."

All and all, mad props to 3D Productions, Ultra Bar, Jungle Jessie, Blaze One, Kying of Thievez, & Aphrodite. It was a night I will not soon forget.

Well its not like i did not see this coming but its still pain full.

I got my first set of Technics 1200's in the summer of 1997, since then turntable has been the hart of my DJ medium of choice. Even when I started exploring Serato & Traktor I always used the turntable as a controller.

Oh well anyone selling their decks I may hord a pair for back up? LOL. No serious.

Kane FM documented and captured the Dub to Jungle tour 2011; the film explores the living history of bass culture with interviews with Channel One Sound System, Congo Natty, Tenor Fly, Klose One, Nanci & Phoebe. We also speak with the stakeholder and Director of Punch Records Ammo Talwar and promoters about the concept behind the tour.

Roots reggae has been cited by many music critics of the 20th century as the mother of many modern music forms. Born from the garrisons of Jamaica this music has given a voice to disaffected peoples of all cultures and all backgrounds around the world. The messages of rebellion and truth seeking that roots provides struck a chord across the globe.

In the 1990′s artists like Ragga Twins, Rebel Mc & Lennie De Ice began to fuse roots reggae with acid house. Jungle techno, or as it was first called, 4beat, was born. Jungle is the child of reggae, conceived by the union of Jamaican sound system culture and British acid house music.

LETS GO BACK TO THE FUTURE!

You can laugh all you like but thats what it felt like. Imagine being transported 10 plus years with a couple of friends, a bunch of strangers and some of the DC Jungle / DnB veterans. Mix in a small backbar with minimal lighting and Presto you have HEADZ.

Most of the night was dedicated to those old school tunes which only aided in the mental rewind of the times. Sure many of us were older showing some grey and have moved on from the party scene but as we all were rocking out and calling for the rewind, it acted as a reminder that we all have a shared foundation in a not to distant past.

Although you can never relive the past, Friday night acted as a reminder that we all have a role to play in the future of music. Matt Rodgers said it best "...we have to educate the people about where their music came from..." I could not agree more.

To all the DJ's that played DJK, Eternal, Psykofly, Quannum Logic, Harry Ransom, Locks, Stress & Matt Rogers (& MC Mecha). Thank you for reminding me of the amazing wealth of tunes that have come before. I found myself continually running over to the booth to remind myself who wrote a track or what the name of a particular tune was.

On that note Eternal posted up his set from that night! So if you did happen to miss it here is a blast from your past.

Halloween ghost story for those who know: I am staying in DC for work this week. My company booked the hotel late in the game so I am little farther out from the convention center. I thought I recognized the area but it had been a while so I wasn't 100% sure since I came in from a different direction. I decided I wanted a McFlurry last night, since there was little else to satisfy my sweet tooth within walking distance. I exited the Hotel and walked past recently cleared lots and new business and apartment high rise buildings - and walked right past the ghost of Nation (aka Capitol Ballroom). Gave me a slight chill. I stopped for a bit and over the dull rush of nearby 395 traffic, I could hear people standing in 2 separate lines discussing the last time they had seen "DJ So-and-So". Exchanging urban rave legends and bragging about a new mixed tape. The sound of promoters handing out flyers and spreading the word about a nearby up and coming event. Bums asking for some "help" by offering to protect your car from possible vandalism. I caught glimpses of myself and groups of friends dressed to impress, intent on one-upping each other on the dance floor. I stood on that piece of sidewalk for almost 2 minutes before moving on. Best paranormal experience I have had in a looooooong time.

This exhibition offered the most comprehensive presentation to date of South African artist Siemon Allen’s “collection projects.” Over the last decade, Allen has created expansive installations of various mass-produced ephemera—postal stamps, newspapers, audio recordings—that he has methodically acquired and catalogued. In terms of process, he approaches each project like an archivist, researching and assembling artifacts to disclose underlying narratives about their production, dissemination, use, and message. Allen employs the social critique that inevitably arises from his work as a means of interrogating what he describes as “the contradictory and complex nature of South African identity.”

FTA EVENT: Scales & Wax Saturday Aug. 13th

Dance Party / Art Show.

Edward the Librarian and Mal Jones would like to invite you and your friends to a night of great Drum & Bass, live painting, art, beer, and dance.

This event is the brain child of good music and a few brews.

Summary:
Edward the Librarian sets the mood with his Drum & Bass*** selections. As people come together, they bring their own energy and enthusiasm. This energy is what I will be looking to harness and guide them through out the rest of the night. Mal Jones will be capturing the nights progression of transpiring energy through his painting prowess. These paintings will be on large canvases that will be easy for spectators to see and enjoy.

The goal is to have an evening where music and art creates a continual energy loop that will snowball through out the evening, putting smiles on attendees faces.

Similar art vs sound events have been done by the artist Jim Mahfood, where we have drawn our inspiration for the event.

Come out Saturday August 13th from 7 to 10pm at the 410 GooDBuddy (410 Florida Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001).

Snacks, music and art are provided. Please BYOB, and dressed to sweat.

Finally the event is FREE!

It's the big things that make a person larger then life, but its the small things that command respect.

I recently pinged Danny Byrd with a one off question on FaceBook, within the hour I had a thoughtful and direct response to my question. Although the dialog would not have filled up a twitter quota, it unleashed a massive amount of respect for a producer that I've admired over the years.

Sometimes its good to meet your hero's as it gives you perspective that they are humans as well.

I'm sitting at home sorting through an itunes playlist sorting my music by BMP and Harmonic Key. I'm mildly amused in a weeks time I would be playing out using Serato. Actually, I was totally freaked out. Even though I've never had a problem with Serato or my computer while DJing, I was mentally racing through all the reasons this was a bad idea. However gig was for a friend who really liked my taste in Mash-Up tunes and to my knowledge you can't get many vinyl Mash-Up tunes. [Breathing] I reminded myself it was a small gig at Mid City Coffee Shop in DC. No worries, no stress just dance music and good times.

I took my computer to a gig. As I started my set I spent most of the evening starring my computer down willing it not to crash. It was noticed by friends of mine who said I looked very serious while DJing. However that was the only real complaint, the evening was a success, you could even say it gave me back my DJ spark. People dancing and singing, everything you could want at a dance party.

Technology wise that first gig was pretty bear bones:

What I learned from this event was no one likes a DJ looking at a computer all night. Its a bit like watching paint dry with a lot of bass. So I was hell bent to my hands away from the computer. It was time to find a midi controller but not a mixer that was also a controller. That sounds like a lot of commitment and money for something I'm now sure if I'm going to really get into.

A week later I was standing in the Guitar Center at Baily's Cross Road taking with Christin G. my go to guy about musical toys. After some discussion about laptop DJ's, midi controllers and the state of the world economy, he directed me towards the Akai LPD 8. Under the guidelines that it would take a beating and not break my budget as I start tinkering with the world of Digital DJing.

Sure nut, it did all that and then more. Plugin, map out, and play. The only tricky part was where to put the controller. After some experimentation it eventually it ended up mounted on the table infront of my mixer. Making it easy to still DJ and fire off cue points. However it also made it easy to fire off cue points with your headphone cable when your dancing about in the DJ booth. FAIL. For the time being I will just have to be careful.

Then a few months later while surfing the net with my morning cup of coffee, I found what I was looking for on DJ TechTools. The Novation Dicers, they integrated into current set up with ease, were easy to set up and fun to use. These little cheap controllers are freaking perfect, with a little mapping I don't ever have to touch my computer.

Now that I've got a year behind me and 20 odd gigs later I've learned a few odd things:

1) Serato and my encoding process has put me back in touch with a lot of music I had not listened to in ages.
2) On that note I've learned more about my records and harmonic mixing as a result of my encoding practices.
3) Do not mix WAV and Vinyl during a set on a large sound system. Vinyl make your WAV files sound weak, hollow and its even worse with MP3's.
4) Digital DJing is a lighting rod for very heated conversation.
5) Don't stop mixing your vinyl as its a skill that can be lost without practice.
6) Stop looking at the freaking laptop.
7) Always remember your freaking control records
8) Large sound systems can make your track sound lack luster, work with the sound engineer during sound check to make your set sound good
9) Continue to buy vinyl, cause encoding records yourself give you more control over your sound
10) Quoting a shirt I saw in on Amen Omen "Serato should be earned".

Expanding on number 10. I agree, jet setter and controlerist have earned the usage of the digital platform. Have I? I'm not sure. Its great for Mash-Up, playing tracks I produce and amazing for helping me to organize the annex. However recently I was able to do an odd thing I feel. I built my crate of vinyl from front to back ordered by BMP and Harmonic Key. This organization allowed me to dig through my crate and craft and evening harmonically which I've never purposely tried to do. I have to give Digital DJing credit for exposing me to the theory and providing me the means start sorting my records in such a matter.

ARTICLE: Stepping into the Digital DJing Void: Part 2 | The Process

If their was ever a daunting task, converting the record collection I had amassed over the last 11 year was a pretty epic task indeed. Over those last 11 years I could speculate that I've bought about 15-20 records a month. Thus a conservative estimate would be around 2000 records. So roughly 4000 tracks at mins in length would mean that I will encode 333 hours of music.

With this in mind, if I'm going to do this... I want to do it right. This way I don't have to re-encode my music again. So the research began, what I found (or did not find) surprised me. Basically an epic lack of information on this topic. I really expected instant gratification on the "best practices" for vinyl conversion. Some audiophile's essay on the topic, maybe so youTube videos, heck I would take a thread on the Serato message boards.

Lacking guidance I took it on myself to start experimenting with hardware & software.

Originally I was using the record output from my DJM600, keeping the EQ flat and importing into an Digidesign Mbox. This worked for a while, but its work flow was annoyingly slow. Import track to ProTools, bounce the track, import the track to itunes, add the *meta information, analyze with XONE Mixed in Key 4, import it into Serato.
*(track name, artist, ect.)

These 5 steps took me on average 10+ mins per track, but the real kicker was the DJM600 sound output really pushed / distorted the low end.

Needless to say I needed a new device top play and transmit a raw unaltered copy of my beloved tracks. After shopping around I finally choose the Numark TTX-USB.

Now armed with the TTX-USB, sampled a series of softwares to encode my tracks with. Adobe Soundbooth, Apple Soundtrack Pro, & Audicity.

All of these had similar workflow issues. How many steps does it take to get to the center of a Jungle record collection. On average it took about 7-9 steps. Then I happened on "CD Spin Doctor" a program bundled with in Roxio: Toast 10.

CD Spin Doctor allows you to encode vinyl, edit, add meta information and export to itunes. This revolutionized my work flow.

However using CD Spin Doctor has meant that I had to change my encoding format. Up until this point I had been using WAV or AIF in an attempt to collect as much frequency spectrum as possible. Thus trying avoiding the trappings of MP3s and their shrill, hallow sounds when played on a large sound system.

After a series of in the field testing I choose AAC for its sound, file size and all around compatibility with iTunes, Serato, Traktor & XONE Mixed in Key. Side note sorry to all the Jungle heads at SR2 that got to hear me testing WAV, AIF, AAC, & MP3 and the variety of setting for each.

My current work flow is simple, easy and very streamlined:

1) Import the track using the UBS input on the TTX-USB in to CD Spin Doctor
2) Find the meta information on Discogs & add to my Discogs "collection"
- Title
- Artist
- Catalogue Number
- Year
- Album Art
3) Export to iTunes
4) Analyze file using XONE Mixed in Key 4
- BPM
- Common Key
5) Add to my Serato library
6) Copy all the metro information to pre-made sticker and apply them to the vinyl

Start to finish takes only 3 programs, one web site and on average I can work through a in roughly 8 mins. Often these steps are done simultaneously. So while I'm adding the meta data, i'm encoding my next record.

This work flow takes the boredom out of waiting for your record to encode. You can also do other tasks (like write a blog post). In the time it took me to write this (Part2) out I've encoded 22 tracks, drank 3 cups of coffee and tormented my cat with a lazier pointer. LOL.

When we continue this story in part 3, I will talk about how I've adjusted to DJing. The tools, the technics and methods I've created to handle the untangle madness.

August of 2008, I set myself some goals. Start DJing again, reconnect with the DMV DJ community and digitize "the Annex". These are the lessons learned during the past three years while trying to create a digital Annex.

Background:
I love vinyl nothing sounds, feels and smells like vinyl. My wife and family complain I have an unhealthy obsession with vinyl records. I would agree with my hart and soul. I dream about music, I will subject friends and family to hours of waiting while I dig in record shops or talk to locals about there scene. I've suggested to my wife about moving to a large house or acquiring a second storage unit for music equipment and vinyl storage (I'm only partly joking).

When I started fiddling with digital DJing it was with mixed emotions. I had just completed a thinly valid year tour of all the finest snowboarding resorts in the Swiss, German & French Alps. During which I was separated from my record collection for the first time in 6 years. I fell into a bit of a funk, which I pried out with the help of 2 local record stores, a lot of snowboarding and an independent radio station. When I got back state side I was hell bent ever to leave my record collection again. Around this time Serato made its debut and its adoption by the turntablist community gave me the motivation to give it a try. I had head of Final Scratch and seen ads for what would later become Traktor, but at that time I was a vinyl purist and looked down at CD, or any other media format.

I remember when I got Serato my computer at the time (and old macbook) was unable to handle the software so I had to use my fathers iMac. I remember him watching as I hooked it up to turntables and showed him how these "time coded" records could control the MP3. Both of us amused about at how old school technology was being used to control cutting edge technology.

I would be almost a year later that while working for a company in DC I would get a computer fast enough to handle Serato. At this point I had forgotten the pain of separation from my music and only lightly tinkered with Serato here and their. I had a hard time trusting new technology to not fail on me in the middle of a set. Especially as I had witnessed it happen to countless other DJs in small and large clubs through out DC. Plus I had 3 amazing record stores to pick up new tracks from (DJ Hut (R.I.P.), Capital City Records(R.I.P.), & Crooked Beat).

So I sold Serato to finance new DJM600 mixer, and for a few years I was back to my old vinyl purist self. Giving touring DJs hell when ever they busted out their CDs or computers.

Then the unthinkable happened Capital City Records closed its doors and DJ Hut followed suite soon after in 2007. My vinyl life line was cut off. I was left to the world of mail order vinyl. NYC shops online interface sucked, West coast distributors stoked a lot Junglecore that never really excited me much. I started importing records from Japan, France & England (the lions share came from England). This got costly fast and turned me off for a while.

Now we can pick up where the whole story began in the summer of 2008. I had just traded a Rane TTM56 Mixer for a used Serato SL1. Fair swap but I would later regret selling my beloved TTM56 (thats another story).

When we continue with part 2 of this story, I will regal you with the trials and tribulations of how I eventually found my work flow for converting vinyl.
