FTA MUSIC: The Librarian presents Cheap Vinyl Challenge 2021

 The Librarian's set from the international DJ competition called Cheap Vinyl Challenge.

In the spirit of Top Gear, we were tasked with creating a set of 15 records for under $40.90 / £30.

Thus I set out to create the very cheapest Jazzy Jungle vibes, all vinyl from the annex archive.

... did I win? No, but a very nice set was created. 2nd place ain't bad.

Big ups to Catch 22 for bringing home the gold.

Also a huge shout out to all the other players. DJ B-Sides, BeersAndBeatsPDX, Ghaleon everyone brought their A-game to the party.

Of course, I would be doing their whole event a disservice by not toasting the host Man Like Deeps. Respect

FTA News: Save the Vinyl - DC DnB vinyl preservation

October 10th, 2020

I got a ping from DJ Slant the other day. Slant is a founding member of DC's 2Tuff Crew, a legendary crew of DJs that really pushed the Jungle / DnB scene here in the DC area.

The reason I was getting a message was that his basement had taken on water, which affected a chunk of his vinyl collection. Roughly 4 large crates of records from 1994-2001 era of Jungle/ Drum & Bass. He was going to chuck the full lot and wanted to know if I wanted to try and save them. I think my exact words were "I'm on my way... where do you live?"

Man, these records were in bad shape. I think they had been waterlogged for about a week before I got a call. So bloody hell they were gross, with mold and funk. This is going to have to be a full restoration project.

Some quick clarifications, "Restoration"... maybe not. It is more like preservation. Meaning I'm not going to source all the sleeves or print duplicate record labels. I could give a fig about the paper. All I care about is preserving the sound. As a junglist, I cut my teeth on white labels and I'm going to be making a boatload of them. 

Oh my days, these babies have seen better days.

So how am I going to do all this? How do I do it in a way that is safe for the grooves and safe for me? I bring up my safety because it's a little unclear the ratio of rainwater to sewage. However, as someone who has had his basement flooded with sewage, it is not a light-hearted topic. That stuff is dangerous and you should treat it with respect. (breathing)

Before I go any further, can I just take a moment on how stoked I am that DJ Slant thought to give me a shout to see if I could (or would want to) save these Golden Era records? Still trips me out a bit.

Alright after reaching out to some local record stores and a metric ton of internet research I think here is the plan for phase 1.

PHASE 1: CLEAN THAT !#%^ UP

1. SOAK

        - Photo document the labels

        - Water & Dawn solution

        - Quick micro fiber wipe down

2. BLEACH BATH

        - Water & Bleach solution

        - soak / shock

3. PRESSURE WASHER

        - Create a Framework to hold the records in a safe/controlled manner

        - Clean with water

                • Removing all the mold and labels

4. DRY

        - Air Compressor

        - Microfiber wipe down

5. STORE

        - Plastic Sleeves

        - Put an ID Tag on the sleeve so we can collect the photo data from step 1 

Phase 2: CATALOG & CLEAN AGAIN

Because I'm unclear how good of a job this will actually do I'm assuming it will need a second round to make it playable. This step may be overkill but I want to make sure I'm crossing all the T's and dotting all the i's to save this Golden Era Sound.

1. CATALOG: 

Cross-referencing all the photos and matching them up with the meta data on www.discogs.com and www.rolldabeats.com.

Creating Labels and transferring that data to these labels.

2. VINYL VAC

As it sounds it's just a shop vac with an attachment... to you guessed it vacuum these tracks. 

3. ULTRA SONIC 

In recent years Ultra Sonic cleaners have become cheap enough that vinyl heads like me can afford to sonically blast their records. This currently is my last line of restoration, mainly because I don't own one yet. (I'm going to make a plug for support here in a bit. Foreshadowing ba ha)

After all that we will any love will have some clean & playable records to drop on this website and the Monday nights show.

DIY Reuse DJ Set Up: Record Bin

Just after leaving my dad at the airport he noted: 

"Hey don't buy anything or make any big decisions till 48 hours after you have landed back in the states. Jet lag can do a real number on you."

 

With this in mind let me tell you how I converted an old DJ coffin into a new record bin. HA!

 

Here is the coffin in my studio. It was mainly there so I could put synths and noisemakers in my production. However, I'm building a better place for all that to happen in. Thus I have this coffin that is a real pain when I have my record cases on it. So in my jet-lagged brain, I said "I GOT THIS!" and measured out how much room space I had.

3 rows! that's great. I originally thought I would cut and pull out all carpet but that was a pain so I just grabbed the circular saw and went at it.

THANK JAH! I did not clog up my saw with all that carpeting. It actually was pretty smooth sailing to be transparent. All those years of freestyling with a saw on skate ramps paid off.

With my cuts made it became clear the middle strips were not load-bearing. So supports were fashioned as you can see below.

Here is where I have to apologize for the Julia Childs's move, I'm about to pull. TADA! Here is the finished product. What you missed was a week of sourcing old yoga mats, spray paint and a few support nails.

Since the build was completed I have to say I'm pleased as punch with the results. I've been looking at DIY plans for record bins for years. Time and money always kept me from pulling the trigger. This, on the other hand, was a free, and quick build.

So if you have an old DJ coffin floating around in your basement taking up space and you are in need of a record bin. I hope this gives you some ideas.

... and it looks MINTY!!!!

every once in a while a DJ or an old head puts up their collection. In this case its a hell of a collection for DNB fans.

From the Craigslist ad:

Over 200 LP/EP from 1997 to 2003, the bulk of which is most likely 1999-2001. Also have a crate of 100+ singles and promos and such from the same time-frame.

It's largely Drum n' Bass, but there is some old jungle, dub, and other randomness. Lots of Bad Company, Total Science, Dillinga and stuff from RAM, Renegade Hardware, Virus, etc. All played at least a few times, but all in very good shape. They've always been cared for and kept shelved/climate controlled when not on the decks. I'm selling the lot, not singles.

Asking price $1100

Which is to rich for my reserves at the moment (baby, live stream and a trip to Scotland in my future). However, lets break it down for a second, roughly that is the price of 100+ new records and your getting some ULTRA classics with no discogs hassle or shipping fees. If you have the funds DO IT ALREADY! Its killing me I get daily alerts from CL that their are Jungle/DnB records for sale in the DMV, stop my pain.

FTA EVENT: Vinyl Purist Radio with The Librarian and Drip [Live Stream Video]

The other night I got the opportunity to get on to Vinyl Purist Radio a live stream YouTube channel for vinyl heads. I can't speak highly enough about how much fun it was to play for them. Hart and Teresa totally treated me like family, especially as I badgered Hart with questions about his set up, his vinyl collection and his DJ history. Expect to see more from Hart Drip on From The Annex... hint hint. HA!

Expect to see some dancing, mixing and goofy antic from me, while Drip is nothing but surgical with his mixing performance beside the occasional grin from my hollering as he drops tracks that I wish I had played or did not know I owned (always check the b side folks).
